TEMPERATURE AND WATER PRESSURES MONITORING AT ST. MARK’S SQUARE IN VENICE

During the renovation work on Piazza San Marco in Venice, Tecnopenta installed a system for monitoring the interstitial pressures of the soil beneath the trachyte flooring on the south side of the Narthex of the St. Mark’s Basilica.

The sensors were positioned at different depths of interest and paired with temperature sensors. The filters installed in the borehole are Casagrande type , with an o-ring system that seals the communication between the filter and the sensor but which allows the sensor to be extracted if necessary. The sensors are of the relative type, the measurements are therefore referred to atmospheric pressure.

The purpose of the monitoring, carried out by Tecnopenta, is to provide the data necessary for the analysis of the tidal water paths beneath the St. Mark’s Basilica in order to be able to plan any safeguard works. The data is sent to the Tecnopenta web server which makes them accessible and can be downloaded if the internet connection is working.

During the excavation works, in addition to the system already described, two inclination sensors were installed on the Acritani Pillars by a Tecnopenta’s client company in order to monitor any movements due to the presence of the construction site.

The data was sent in real time as well as displayed on a display on the construction site.
