Slope Stability

The science that studies the stability of landslide slopes is certainly an extremely complicated and interesting branch of geotechnics. Understanding how a landslide slope will behave over time requires in-depth studies and the correlation of multiple data and observations. This section contains all those instruments used for monitoring landslides and studying slope stability. Useful for creating alarm systems, including early warning ones, the instruments in question are depth strain gauges, tiltmeters for monitoring landslides, surface strain gauges, avalanche sensors and many other instruments useful for providing data that give indications on the stability of the slopes.
The instruments collected here can be divided into two groups, those used for monitoring slow movements and those that identify fast movements. The monitoring of groundwater levels is also often a key element for estimating the stability of slopes, groundwater level sensors and pressure transducers are within the category dedicated to hydrogeology.

DESCRIPTION
The surface extensometer measures the relative displacement between two points, up to 30 meters apart, in the landslide area.

The operation of the strain gauge is simple and involves fixing the first end of a rope (tensioned by weights or springs) in a stable part of the area outside the landslide and the other end in the moving area.

The lengthening of the rope, integral with a displacement meter, allows the extent of the displacement caused by the landslide movement to be assessed.
