Turbidimeter for measuring water turbidity: what it is, how it works, and why it is essential in water monitoring and treatment systems with self-cleaning sensors

What is a turbidimeter and what is it used for?

A professional turbidimeter measures turbidity in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) using the principle of nephelometric measurement: a beam of light hits the sample and the sensor detects the scattered light from suspended particles.

Thanks to its sensitivity, the turbidimeter is used for:

  • continuous monitoring in drinking water plants
  • water quality control of spring and mineral waters
  • management of activated sludge plants
  • analysis in sedimentation tanks, flocculators, swimming pools and bathing facilities
  • verification of the efficiency of filtration systems

How does a digital turbidimeter work?

The turbidimeters installed by Tecnopenta are digital electronic instruments, precise and configurable. They operate with:

  • measurement range 0–4000 NTU
  • resolutions up to 0.001 NTU for high-precision readings
  • isolated analog outputs 0/20 or 4/20 mA
  • direct value display, alert and threshold settings
  • manual or automatic calibration

They are compatible with flow cells or immersion installations, even on pressurized pipelines.

Turbidimeter with self-cleaning: continuous efficiency

The TU8182 model, for example, is equipped with an automatic self-cleaning system using compressed air jet, which keeps the sensor lenses free from dirt or scaling. This ensures consistent performance and reduces maintenance needs even in environments with high concentrations of suspended solids.

Tecnopenta and field applications

Tecnopenta installs and configures professional turbidimeters for public entities, industries, and water consortia. In several locations across northern Italy, systems are already operational, designed to integrate turbidity measurement with other environmental parameters (pH, conductivity, temperature). Each installation is tailored to the site’s technical and logistical requirements.

Turbidimeter: price and available configurations

The price of a turbidimeter depends on the version (immersion or flow-through), the presence of the self-cleaning system, the measurement scale, and the need for integration with other instruments or dataloggers. Tecnopenta offers complete solutions and technical support in selecting the most suitable sensor.
