Triaxial Accelerometer: the essential sensor for structural and geotechnical monitoring. Operation, applications, and Tecnopenta professional solutions

The triaxial accelerometer is an essential instrument for measuring accelerations along three orthogonal axes: X, Y, and Z. This sensor is used in many fields, from geotechnics and structural engineering to mechatronics and the manufacturing industry.

What is a triaxial accelerometer?

A triaxial accelerometer detects the movement or vibration of an object in three-dimensional space. Compared to a uniaxial accelerometer, which measures along only one axis, the triaxial model provides a more complete view of the dynamic behavior of a structure or body.

How a triaxial accelerometer works

Its operation is based on microtechnologies such as MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems), which detect changes in acceleration through micromechanical elements. When the device is subjected to movement, these components shift, generating an electrical signal proportional to the acceleration.

The output of a triaxial accelerometer consists of three signals, one for each axis. From these signals, it is possible to determine:

  • Inclination
  • Vibrations
  • Velocity and displacement (via time integration)
  • Natural frequencies of structures

Applications of the triaxial accelerometer

  • Structural monitoring (bridges, dams, buildings): vibration control and dynamic response analysis.
  • Geotechnics: detection of ground movements and slope instability.
  • Seismology: recording of seismic waves and microtremors.
  • Civil and environmental engineering: early warning systems and damage assessment.
  • Robotics, drones, and automotive: motion control and navigation.
  • Sports and medicine: biomechanical analysis (gait, posture).

The triaxial accelerometer by Tecnopenta

In the Tecnopenta catalog, we offer a high-performance triaxial accelerometer designed for applications in geotechnics and structural engineering. The device is built with weather-resistant materials and is suitable for permanent installations in outdoor or underground environments.
