Tecnopenta S.r.l. designs professional instrumentation for assessing tree stability through inclinometers, dynamometers, and VTA tests in arboriculture

Systems for Assessing Tree Stability

Ensuring tree stability is a priority for public administrations, urban green specialists, designers, and professionals responsible for the safety of urban areas, historic parks, tree-lined avenues, schools, and open spaces. In this context, Tecnopenta S.r.l. provides measurement systems for structural monitoring of trees, with a focus on stability assessment through instrumented tests.

Elasto-Inclinometric (Static Pulling) Tests

Stability assessment can be performed using controlled pulling tests (also known as elasto-inclinometric tests): a gradual load is applied to the stem to simulate wind action, while two key quantities are recorded:

  • Root-collar inclination (base of the trunk) measured with high-sensitivity inclinometers.
  • Force on the stem measured with digital load cells (dynamometers).

These parameters estimate the tree’s capacity to withstand external loads and the overall stability of the root system and stem. Tecnopenta instruments are designed for accuracy, reliability, and ease of use.

When Instrumented Assessment Is Useful

  • Monumental trees or specimens of high historical/landscape value.
  • Trees with visible defects (cavities, abnormal lean, structural damage).
  • Trees in high-traffic areas (schools, hospitals, public parks).
  • VTA evaluations requiring investigation beyond visual diagnosis.

Using instrumentation enables decisions based on objective data, avoiding premature removals or risk underestimation.

Integration with VTA Methodology

Tecnopenta systems integrate with Visual Tree Assessment (VTA): when visual inspection is not sufficient, the instrumented test complements the VTA form with quantitative data, allowing proper risk classification and planning of bracing, pruning, or removal.

Advantages of Tecnopenta Solutions

  • Weather-resistant inclinometers with real-time acquisition.
  • High-precision electronic dynamometers with certified calibration.
  • Data acquisition units compatible with standard digital interfaces.
  • Portable kits for field use, even in hard-to-reach areas.

We provide technical support, training, and assistance for data interpretation.

Data Supporting Urban Green Management

Tree stability verification tools are integral to modern green-space management. Accurate, traceable assessments protect the tree heritage and public safety. Tecnopenta supports agronomists, forestry technicians, designers, and public bodies with a scientific approach to tree stability.
