Flow measurement in open channels and partially filled pipes

Flow measurement in open channels and partially filled pipes is one of the most critical activities in hydraulic monitoring. In the absence of dedicated hydraulic structures such as weirs or flumes, flow must be determined through the integration of flow velocity measurement and water level measurement, according to the continuity principle.

Area-Velocity systems are designed to meet this need by combining velocity sensors, level sensors and a control unit capable of processing hydraulic parameters in real time.

The central controller allows configuration of the section geometry, visualization of level, velocity and flow trends, and data logging for further analysis. Management is performed via standard digital interfaces, enabling integration with supervision systems or remote monitoring platforms.

Velocity can be measured using submerged sensors or non-contact surface radar technology. Submerged sensors operate reliably even in harsh environments and bidirectional flows, while radar technology enables non-invasive installation with reduced maintenance requirements.

The water level can be measured using submerged hydrostatic transmitters or non-contact sensors, with analog or digital output. Communication typically occurs via Modbus-RTU protocol over RS485 interface, ensuring reliability and scalability in multi-sensor networks.

Measurement stations can be configured for permanent or temporary installations, even in remote sites, thanks to autonomous power supply and integrated data logging.

Area-Velocity systems are widely used in sewer networks, irrigation canals, wastewater treatment plants, industrial discharges and hydraulic basins.

The modular approach and use of standard protocols make these solutions highly flexible and easily integrated into existing monitoring architectures.
