Case studies

Tecnopenta designed and implemented a piezometric monitoring system for an infrastructure operator active in the port sector, as part of the verification activities carried out on an impermeable diaphragm wall.

The test was aimed at assessing its hydraulic behaviour by comparing the water levels measured inside and outside the test area, in order to verify the structure’s ability to limit seepage.

To obtain continuous and reliable data, it was necessary to accurately monitor variations in the groundwater level at different points within the area, integrating the measurements with meteorological data useful for interpreting the results.

Groundwater level monitoring

The solution developed by Tecnopenta is based on the installation of piezometers equipped with level sensors, positioned both inside and outside the test diaphragm wall.

This configuration makes it possible to compare groundwater behaviour in the different areas of the test field and to observe variations associated with the test conditions.

The system was also integrated with a rain gauge sensor, used to record rainfall and correlate any variations in water levels with precipitation events.

Measurement point configuration

Four piezometers equipped with 1 bar pressure sensors were installed at a depth of 9 metres from the wellhead.

Piezometer S1 was positioned northwest of the test area, with a measured water level of 462 cm below the wellhead. Piezometer S2, installed inside the test area in the northwest zone, recorded a groundwater level of 382 cm below the wellhead.

Piezometer S3 was positioned inside the test area in the southeast zone, with a groundwater level of 395 cm below the wellhead, while piezometer S4 was installed southwest of the test area, with a measured level of 456 cm below the wellhead.

A rain gauge was also installed near the port area to acquire rainfall data.

Data acquisition and remote monitoring

The instrumentation is connected to a control unit that manages the continuous acquisition of data from the piezometric sensors and the rain gauge.

The information is processed and automatically transmitted to a dedicated web platform, allowing real-time consultation and analysis of the historical trend of the measurements.

The system also allows data and notifications to be sent by email, facilitating control and reporting activities.

Assessment of diaphragm wall performance

The system makes it possible to continuously monitor variations in the groundwater level and compare measurements taken inside and outside the impermeable diaphragm wall during the different test phases.

The integration of piezometric data with rainfall data also makes it possible to assess the influence of precipitation events on water level trends, while remote access to measurements facilitates analysis and monitoring of site conditions.
