Electromagnetic Flow Meter for Low Flow Rates

Tecnopenta’s low flow meter is a compact electromagnetic instrument designed for monitoring water and other electrically conductive liquids. Its compact construction allows direct installation in the hydraulic line, even where installation space is limited.

The instrument is suitable for dosing systems, cooling circuits, water treatment and industrial applications requiring the monitoring of low flow rates. It provides bidirectional flow measurement, a 4–20 mA analogue output and a pulse output for connection to acquisition and control systems.

Electromagnetic measurement with no moving parts

Electromagnetic flow measurement is performed without mechanical moving parts inside the flow. The absence of moving components reduces wear and allows use with liquids containing suspended particles, subject to verification of compatibility with the application.

The measuring principle makes the result largely independent of changes in fluid viscosity. The liquid must be electrically conductive, with a minimum conductivity greater than 20 µS/cm.

Instrument selection must also take into account the chemical compatibility between the liquid and the wetted materials.

DN3–DN25 sizes and flow ranges

The compact electromagnetic flow meter is available in nominal sizes DN3, DN6, DN8, DN15, DN20 and DN25, allowing the configuration to be selected according to line size and the flow rate to be measured.

The overall range covers flow rates above 0.1 l/min and below 250 l/min, equivalent to values above 6 l/h and below 15,000 l/h. The actual range of each version depends on the selected diameter and configuration.

For low flow measurement, sizing should take into account both the minimum value to be measured and the maximum expected operating flow rate.

Fast response for dosing and variable flows

A response time below 100 ms allows rapid changes in flow to be monitored. This makes the instrument particularly suitable as a dosing flow meter and for circuits where flow conditions change frequently.

Bidirectional measurement allows liquid flow to be detected in both directions. The instrument can therefore also be used in applications with oscillating flow, provided operating conditions remain within the limits of the selected configuration.

Stated accuracy is ±0.7% of the measured value, with an additional ±0.3% of range. Repeatability is specified as below ±1%.

4–20 mA output and pulse signal

The sensor provides a 4–20 mA output for transmitting measurements to compatible acquisition or control systems. A pulse output is also available according to the supplied configuration.

Electrical connection is provided through a four-pole M12 × 1 connector. The instrument includes short-circuit and reverse-polarity protection.

A green LED flashing proportionally to the flow rate provides a local indication of liquid flow.

Compact in-line installation

The compact flow meter is installed directly in the line, with the liquid in contact with the internal wetted materials. Different configurations allow diameter and materials to be selected according to system requirements.

The instrument has an IP65 protection rating and an ambient operating temperature from −15 °C to +60 °C. Power supply is 12–24 VDC with ±10% tolerance.

Applications for water and conductive liquids

The flow meter for conductive liquids is suitable for monitoring water and other fluids compatible with the wetted materials.

It can be used in cooling circuits, water treatment plants and liquid dosing systems. The analogue and pulse outputs allow integration into monitoring and automation systems.

Its compact construction and lack of moving parts make it particularly suitable for small-diameter lines requiring continuous measurement and fast response to flow variations.
