What Is a Geophone and What Is It Used For?

A geophone is an active sensor capable of detecting ground vibrations and movements by converting vibrational waves propagating through the soil into electrical signals. This instrument is used to analyze the behavior of soil, structures, and natural or artificial elements subjected to dynamic stresses. More precisely, it functions as a velocimeter, generating an electrical signal in response to a change in velocity.

Thanks to its accuracy and sensitivity, the geophone is widely used in seismic monitoring, applied geophysics, structural health monitoring, and environmental vibration analysis.

Main Applications of a Geophone

Geophones are used in various technical and industrial sectors:

  • Geophysical surveys: Employed in seismic prospecting methods (reflection, refraction, MASW, HVSR), they help determine the mechanical properties of soil and subsoil layers.

  • Structural monitoring: Used to measure vibrations in buildings, bridges, dams, tunnels, and civil infrastructure, helping prevent structural damage or degradation.

  • Environmental vibration monitoring: Applied to measure and analyze vibrations caused by vehicular traffic, construction sites, demolition activities, or industrial processes, in compliance with standards such as UNI 9916.

  • Landslide and ground movement control: Essential in geotechnical monitoring of unstable areas, enabling the detection of anomalous variations or early warning signals of landslide events.

  • Leak detection in buried pipelines: In urban or industrial contexts, geophones can detect the acoustic noise generated by leaks in underground water pipes.

Geophones by Tecnopenta

Tecnopenta offers a complete range of geophones designed for various needs in geophysics, structural health monitoring, and seismic diagnostics. All devices are engineered to ensure reliability, accuracy, and seamless integration with data acquisition systems.

Available models include:

  • Trigger geophones: Designed to activate data acquisition when a predefined vibration threshold is exceeded.

  • Tri-axial geophones: Sensors that detect vibrations along three axes (X, Y, Z), ideal for vectorial analysis and advanced diagnostics.

  • Wall-mount geophones: Designed for vertical surface installations, suitable for monitoring elevated structures.

  • Threshold geophones: Optimized for on/off activation based on vibration threshold exceedance, compliant with UNI 9916 standards.

  • Geophones for landslide and geotechnical monitoring: Developed for installations in high-risk areas with fast-moving ground conditions.

  • Geophones compatible with Tecnopenta seismographs: Such as the D1-Sismi model, for full integration with Tecnopenta data acquisition units.

Tecnopenta provides robust and reliable instruments suitable for temporary field installations or permanent monitoring systems in urban, industrial, or natural environments.
