The I1-VELOCITY RADAR by Tecnopenta is a surface velocity radar sensor designed for continuous water monitoring in rivers, streams, open channels and free-surface conduits.
The instrument uses Doppler radar technology and is installed above the water surface without direct contact with the liquid. This configuration enables non-contact water velocity measurement, avoiding sensor immersion and facilitating inspection and maintenance.
The sensor can be integrated with a level measurement device and a data acquisition system to create a complete flow monitoring station.
Doppler radar technology detects movement of the water surface through the reflected radar signal. The sensor therefore measures surface water velocity within the area covered by the radar beam.
Installation above the water avoids continuous contact with sediment, transported material and deposits, reducing maintenance requirements associated with submerged sensors.
This solution is particularly suitable for sites where access to the riverbed is difficult or where submerged instrumentation would be impractical.
The radar sensor for rivers and channels is suitable for hydrometric stations, irrigation channels and hydraulic monitoring networks.
It can be installed on bridges, poles, walls and other existing structures, with the radar beam directed towards the water surface. The installation point is selected according to the area to be monitored, water level variations and flow conditions.
Above-water installation is especially useful in flood-prone watercourses, where non-contact measurement avoids immersing the sensor.
The I1-VELOCITY RADAR measures surface flow velocity. To determine flow rate, this value must be combined with water level, cross-section geometry and an appropriate relationship between surface velocity and mean flow velocity.
The sensor can therefore be combined with a level measurement device and a data logger to provide a non-contact flow measurement solution.
Correct definition of the cross-section and hydraulic parameters is essential for obtaining a representative flow estimate.
The sensor operates in the K-band at 24.075–24.175 GHz. The velocity measurement range is 0.02 to 15 m/s, with a resolution of 0.001 m/s and stated accuracy of ±1%.
The sampling rate is 10 measurements per second and the specified maximum distance from the water surface is 20 metres, subject to actual installation conditions.
The system features automatic installation angle compensation to correct the measurement according to sensor inclination.
Installation must ensure correct orientation relative to the flow and an unobstructed view of the measurement area. Configuration and diagnostics are carried out using dedicated software.
The I1-VELOCITY RADAR provides RS485 and RS232 interfaces with Modbus RTU protocol, together with a programmable 4–20 mA output.
These connections allow integration with data loggers, PLCs, SCADA systems and compatible remote monitoring equipment. An SDI-12 interface is available as an option.
The sensor requires a 9–27 VDC power supply and has an IP68 protection rating, making it suitable for outdoor installation and permanent monitoring stations.
The operating temperature range is −40 °C to +85 °C. The stated dimensions are 110 × 90 × 50 mm.
